Scholarship
Applications are Open for the 2019
Hidden Springs Retreat Scholarship
For about ten years, a group of authors have been getting together every winter to talk shop and write. This year, we’d like to invite you to join us.
We’re delighted that the KCK Trust has offered one full scholarship and one half scholarship in 2019. We love this retreat, and we want to share the experience with an aspiring writer who demonstrates a financial need. A small thing like money shouldn’t stop us from following our dreams—but sometimes it can, without a little help. So read the rules, break out your laptops, and apply!
Entry Rules
There are two available scholarships. One is for full tuition covering the $360 registration fee. The second scholarship is a $150 off voucher toward tuition.

Registration offers a shared room, twin-size upper bunk. Food and snacks are included as well as all writing classes/critiques, so this covers nearly all of your expenses. The only thing you will need to arrange is travel!
To apply, please read the instructions carefully. Sorry—incomplete applications are disqualified.
Please prepare a scholarship package as a single Word document (.DOC or .DOCX file formats accepted). Your package should include:
-
A cover sheet, filled out with this information:
-
Name: [name]
-
Email: [email]
-
Telephone: [telephone number]
-
I confirm that my scholarship application is complete. I have included a personal essay and a writing sample.
-
A personal essay: A 250-400 word personal essay explaining why you are a good candidate for this scholarship. Why would you like to join our retreat? How will this impact your writing? Keep in mind that we are interested in “need,” but also in what you can bring to the retreat, and how your writing might be benefited.
**ALERT: Please do not include your name or contact info on your essay—this info should only be on the cover sheet.
6. A writing sample: Please provide a brief sample of your writing. This can be anything you choose—a few choice paragraphs from a current WIP, an excerpt from a favorite old project, or a poem you wrote in seventh grade after that loser dumped you. But, keep it short: your samples should consist of 1-2 pieces that total no more than 2,500 words. Try to wow us, succinctly!
**ALERT: Please do not include your name or contact info on your writing samples—this info should only be on the cover sheet.
What to Do Next
You’re done? Great! Please send your scholarship package to coryweb@me.com.
Remember! Send everything in your scholarship package in one email attachment, saved as [Hidden Springs Scholarship Your Name].
Example: Hidden Springs Scholarship Robison Wells.doc
The application period opens on October 1, 2019 and closes at midnight on October 15, 2019. That’s two weeks for you to shine up your work!
The recipient of the Hidden Springs Scholarship will be contacted in late October, and announced on October 31st. (A half scholarship will be awarded to the runner up.) Then it will be just a couple of weeks until the retreat!
A Couple Things to Remember
-
The scholarship is open to anyone, published or unpublished, with one caveat: you have to be 18 to attend. No babies, please.
-
What if you know one of the organizers personally? That’s okay. The application material will be reviewed completely blind. We won’t know who you are, because we’re fair like that.
-
A very small warning: Is it possible that you might apply to the scholarship but not get picked as the recipient? Yeah, that’s possible. And if that happens, there may not be availability afterward for you to register. We’re selling out really fast. So, if you can afford to register, just go ahead and register! That way we can give the scholarship to someone who couldn’t otherwise attend. This is a hard decision, we know. We like you, whatever you decide.
A Few Last Words
Good luck, and we can’t wait to meet you this year! If you know someone who might be interested in our scholarship, please share. It’s going to be fun, there’s going to be writing, and we’re sure to make some great memories. We’ll do our best to help you find your story.
